The Copper & Blue - Game 50 - Oilers at WildA site for fans of the Edmonton Oilers. Someday we'll get to write about an Oilers playoff game.
The Wild beat the Oilers 4-1

I'm done trying to sugar coat anything this team does. The Oilers lost and they lost bad. The obvious problem with the Oilers has been in net or so stupid people would have you think. So MacTavish in his infinite wisdom decided to jump start this team by getting a "number one" goalie. Surprise surprise Ben Scrivens, who hasn't allowed more than 3 goal against this season, allows 4 on 33 shots! Maybe, just maybe the issue has never actually been in net. This team needs defence and it needs it badly!

This team sucks! When an "offensive powerhouse" like the Minnesota Wild can score 4 goals then there are major defensive issues.

Anyway onto the game.

So MacTavish picked up the phone as God had commanded him. Lowe and MacTavish then got all of the print media together and said, "Listen up, scribes! We've given you the grit you've been calling for!" They then introduced Matt Hendricks, and many of the scribes were satisfied. But later, God said to Lowe and MacTavish, "Because you did not trust in me, and picked up the phone to satisfy the scribes before picking it up in obedience to me, you will not succeed in bringing this team into the glory I have promised them."

Xcel Energy Center, 6:00 p.m. MST
Television: Sportsnet

Visiting Team Scouting Report: Minnesota is one of three teams currently vying for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. And while the Wild made big headlines with their signings of Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, they're also relying heavily on youth to help them get there. In tonight's lineup, the starting goaltender (Darcy Kuemper), two top four defenders (Jonas Brodin and Marco Scandella), and four top nine forwards (Nino Niederreiter, Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, and Jason Zucker) are under the age of 24. They've had some bad luck with injuries to key players, but this team has a young core clearly moving in the right direction, and they'll have plenty of money to spend this off-season with Dany Heatley's contract coming off the books.

Expected Lineups:

Edmonton Oilers (15-29-5):

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Gagner
Yakupov - Arcobello - Eberle
Perron - Gordon - Hendricks
Joensuu - Smyth - Jones

Ference - J Schultz
Marincin - Petry
Belov - N Schultz

Scrivens

Minnesota Wild (25-19-5):

Niederreiter - Granlund - Pominville
Heatley - Coyle - Zucker
Cooke - Brodziak - Fontaine
Veilleux - Haula - Mitchell

Suter - Brodin
Scandella - Prosser
Ballard - Stoner

Kuemper

By The Numbers:

Matt Hendricks didn't play a game in the NHL until his 27-year-old season, one of only 37 forwards to debut at that age or older since the start of the 2005-06 season. Three of those 37 forwards made their debut with the Oilers: Charles Linglet, Steve MacIntyre, and Lennart Petrell.

The Minnesota Wild bought low when they acquired Nino Niederreiter in the summer, and so far the gamble is paying off handsomely. After playing all of last season in the AHL, Niederreiter has emerged as a solid top nine forward with Minnesota, scoring 25 points through 49 games. Perhaps the most impressive part of that point total is that 20 of the points have come at even strength, putting him in a tie for 93rd in the NHL.

Ben Scrivens hasn't played very much at the NHL level, but he has played quite a bit at the AHL level, generating a .923 save percentage on 2,626 shots over parts of three seasons with the Marlies. AHL performance doesn't always translate to the NHL, but it is heartening to see that he played quite well at that level.

The will be no Ales Hemsky in Minneapolis tonight. Which means one less reason to watch the game.

When the Oilers take on the Wild tonight in Minneapolis they will do so without Ales Hemsky.

That doesn't sound good, and unfortunately with Hemsky when it doesn't sound good it is often as bad or worse than it sounds. Hemsky has a history of playing through a lot when it comes to injuries, last season he played with a broken foot, so if he can't go it's got to be pretty bad. Given that he's returning to Edmonton I would guess that he probably won't be in the lineup on Saturday afternoon when the Oilers play in Winnipeg either.

For tonight there is no word yet on how the lineup will be adjusted to address this. The most logical solution to me is to move Ryan Smyth up the lineup into Hemsky's spot, leaving the newly acquired Matt Hendricks to play the pivot between Luke Gazdic, and Ryan Jones as the Oilers fourth line.

The Oilers made a couple of moves yesterday. They dealt maligned goaltender Devan Dubnyk (11-17-2, .894 SV%) to Nashville for centre Matt Hendricks (2-2-4 in 44 GP). Second, they dealt a third round pick to Los Angeles for goaltender Ben Scrivens (7-5-4, .931 SV%). If you'd like a quick refresher on these deals, you can get 'em here, here and here, and a nice recap here. Hendricks has played wing in Nashville this year so there's a little flexibility on where he can play. I don't think he's an upgrade on Anton Lander, but if he's in Edmonton for the duration of his contract, I don't see how Lander ever sees the light of day again. I like Ben Scrivens and I don't think a third round pick was too much to get him, although the Oilers will need to get to signing him soon if they're going to make this deal count. Also, it makes no damn difference who's in goal unless this team fixes the frickin' defence. Good luck, Scrivens.

The Oilers are saying

That was my team growing up... it's going to be fun to throw on that jersey and play for that logo.

That's Ben Scrivens upon learning he'd been dealt to the Oilers.

You know what they say, if you can't draft an Oil King, you might as well trade for a local product. A Spruce Grove native, Scrivens says all the right things about getting to come play for his favourite team growing up.

Here's the deal: I want to see Ben Scrivens succeed. I don't have the foggiest idea what this team has planned for him as far as him being the starter or backup. Here's what I do know: if the Oilers sign him, he'll be the only goaltender on the team with any NHL experience signed past this year. So look, I want this to work out. But for the love of anything that's good, if this team doesn't get some help on D fast, he's going to get blasted.

The Opponent is saying

Things might have been getting a little hot under the collar for Mike Yeo at the end of 2013, as the Wild were losers of six straight games. Things seem to have straightened out a little, as the Wild have won five of their last seven.

Of note:

The Wild don't score very much. They're 27th in the league averaging 2.29 goals per game. If you're not scoring a ton, you'd better have some solid defence. They're allowing only 27.5 shots per game, good for fifth overall in the league.

Minnesota is missing some key pieces in Mikko Koivu (ankle) and Zach Parise (foot). Josh Harding hasn't played since December 31st due to an illness.

UPDATE: Ales Hemsky will not be in the lineup today due to an ankle injury. Hemsky has returned to Edmonton, and could be out for Saturday's game at Winnipeg as well.
