After getting worked over in the 1st period, Connor McDavid carries the Oilers to 5-3 win over Calgary.

Heading into the season, there was talk of McDavid winning Art Ross and Hart trophies. I was a bit skeptical because hey, he's just 19. He's just in his 2nd year. He missed half a season and will have to grind through a full NHL season.

So yeah, nuts to all that. McDavid is freaking great. For the 2nd game in a row he carried the Oilers to a victory over the Flames, a team the Oilers hadn't had anything resembling success against the past 2 seasons.

NHL Gamecenter Recap

This was looking like a game that not even McDavid could save early on, as the Flames jumped out to an early lead and dominated the Oilers, out shooting them 24-12 and just making life miserable for the Oilers on their breakout, hemming them in quite bit with their forecheck. The Oilers were lucky to escape being down just 2-1, thanks to a Connor McDavid breakaway goal.

Pro-tip: Maybe don't let him have those. I mean keep doing it for our sake, but for yours, maybe try and eliminate that.

The 2nd period on was a much better showing as the Oilers controlled the play, despite a pair of bad penalties by Pouliot. The Oilers PK, especially the forwards, did a great job preventing Calgary from gaining the zone and kept pressure on the puck all around the ice. So much gets made about how to kill penalties in your own zone, but it gets far easier when the puck isn't in your zone. Speaking of power plays, the Oilers got their own PP goal as Eberle banged home the only goal of the period after the Oilers crashed the net.

One of the stories of the first 5 periods of this season has been Milan Lucic. To put it bluntly, he'd been pretty awful. The play was constantly dying on his stick. and he looked pretty awful on a shorthanded goal against in game 1, and pretty disinterested in general in his own end. He finally got on track in the 3rd period of this game, picking up a pair of assists including a nice feed on the power play on Leon Draisaitl's first goal. His 2nd assist (on another Draisaitl goal), was the Milan Lucic the Oilers figured they were getting when they signed him. He fought off several checks to keep the puck out of the Oilers zone, then got the puck to Draisiatl who cruised to an empty net goal.

In the end though, this was a McDavid game. When he was on the ice, the Oilers dominated. When he wasn't they got their teeth kicked in.

He played a team high 22 minutes (yes, that includes defensemen) and made the Flames look ridiculous on multiple occasions. The Oilers have to find something other than McDavid that works or it's going to be a long, brutal season.

The Pouliot, RNH line needs to find a winger to play with them and Puljujarvi isn't NHL ready.

Zack Kassian had himself a decent game (especially on the PK), though he went hunting on the first Flames goal which ended up with an odd man situation in the Oilers end that they couldn't recover from. He simplified his game after that, which is good news for the Oilers because they are going to need someone to step up and fill the giant holes they have on the non-McDavid lines.

2-0 to start the season, a games against Buffalo and Carolina coming up, and for the first time in a while, the Oilers could start out a season not well behind the eight ball.

Tonight's Storyline

That was a fun game on Wednesday night, wasn't it? And not just because the Oilers won, that part was great, but with a combined 11 goals and plenty of chances at both ends of the rink it was a lot of fun to watch. I don't believe that hockey needs a lot of goals to be exciting, but rarely is a game with a lot of goals not exciting, and that game on Wednesday was exciting.

I doubt though that the men paid to coach these two teams enjoyed it nearly as much as we all did. Even for an early season game there were more defensive zone mistakes than either coach is likely willing to accept, and I'm sure that the players were told as much after the game. And then again yesterday. There are never any guarantees, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if tonight's game is a tighter affair defensively, with a couple fewer goals scored. I'll be hoping for the opposite though.

Line Combinations

Zack Kassian moves up in the lineup, replacing Anton Slepyshev on the Oilers' second line; Anton Lander takes Slepyshev's spot in the lineup, filling the hole on the fourth line where Kassian played on Wednesday. Also drawing in tonight is Eric Gryba who replaces the injured Brandon Davidson.

Seven Goals Is Alright With Me

The Oilers opened Rogers Place with a bang, scoring seven goals to emerge victorious over the stupid Flames. There was plenty to like about this game: Connor McDavid (2-1-3) scored on a penalty shot, and was his old usual self. The Oilers got secondary scoring from guys like Patrick Maroon, Tyler Pitlick and Zack Kassian. Jesse Puljujärvi scored his first career goal, Jordan Eberle had an empty netter, and the Oilers played well enough to earn their first W of the season. I'd be a little concerned with allowing two shorthanded goals in just about two minutes, but because our decade has been dryer than a lint trap, let's chalk that up to a good old statistical blip.

The Oilers visit Calgary tonight. Can they spoil the Flames' home opener?

That's Oilers head coach Todd McLellan on the play of Connor McDavid, who's pretty good IMO

I've got some significant questions about the defence, and with Brandon Davidson due to miss some significant time after sustaining an injury on Wednesday, the Oilers will need to depend on McDavid and company to put up more games like this one. It's not reasonable to expect six or seven goals every night, but hey, I'm not going to turn aside a perfectly good seven goal outburst if you're bringing it.

TKACHUK - <strike>One of the nice things about signing a guy like Milan Lucic is that he prevents incidents from happening on the ice. When someone gets slighted, there's Milan Lucic in the offender's face holding him accountable</strike>. Brandon Davidson is on injured reserve after Matt Tkachuk slew-footed Davidson in the second. Maybe someone knocks on Tkachuk's door tonight. You know, to pay him a visit. To bring him some cookies, I don't know. Tkachuk made even more friends after laying a big hit on Adam Larsson in the dying seconds of the third. Larsson took a maintenance day yesterday.

GRYBA: Filling the skates of the injured Brandon Davidson will be Eric Gryba, at least for tonight. He'll likely pair with Darnell Nurse tonight, which has me feeling all sorts of teenage angst.

RUSSELL: It's exactly one game, but Kris Russell didn't look like a tire fire out there. Our bar has been set low, but I'll take another game like the one I saw on Wednesday from Kris Russell. Eventually the bag runs out of mints, but maybe it's a big bag of mints.

KASSIAN: Zack Kassian practiced with the second line on Thursday, so look for him to be with Pouliot and Nugent-Hopkins to start tonight. Anton Slepyshev was seen on line four. Man, the Oilers could use someone to play mid six RW right about now.

Cam Talbot (1-0-0, .902 SV% / 4.03 GAA) will likely start for the Oilers tonight. Brian Elliot (0-1-0, .778 SV% / 6.07 GAA) will likely get the nod as Calgary begins a back-to-back.

Iiro Pakarinen (knee), Drake Caggiula (hip), Brandon Davidson (lower body) and Matt Hendricks (lower body) will not dress for the Oilers tonight. Calgary will be without Ladislav Smid (neck)

YAK-WATCH: Nail Yakupov played 8 and a half minutes against Minnesota, had a goal and an assist en route to the first star of the game. He assisted on a goal scored by Magnus Pääjärvi, the goalie was Devan Dubnyk. No, it really happened.

It’s time for some actual NHL hockey and we’ve got a quick look at what lies ahead for the Oilers this week.

Eight preseason games is about four too many for my tastes, so I am thilled that the preseason is finally over and the new NHL season is ready to start. Wednesday can’t get here soon enough. It might be just a matter of hours away now, but the Oilers still have work to do both on and off the ice though. They still have to make their final cuts and the team’s new arena needs to be ready for the official home opener on Wednesday night when the Oilers play host to the Calgary Flames. That game will be the first of a home and home series with the Flames in what will be a short opening week for the Oilers.

The Oilers final game at Rexall Place should have been against the Flames. Considering the history between these two teams, that it was the Canucks and not the Flames that were in town for Rexall Place's last hurrah just felt off. Of course, given the Flames recent run off success in Edmonton that might have been a blessing. In their last nine games played at Rexall Place the Flames won eight times, including lopsided wins by scores of 8-1, 4-0, and 5-0. Maybe the schedule makes knew what they were doing after all.

After hosting the Flames for their season opener, the Oilers will travel three hours south to return the favour on Friday night; after the game Calgary will fly to Vancouver to participate in a third home opener on Saturday night. I had a great many things to say about the deal at the heart of Edmonton's arena project (and I still do have a lot to say as well) but there is no doubt that what has been built here in Edmonton is fantastic. And for anyone who attends both games that will be crystal clear after they spend an evening in the <strike>dump</strike> arena that the Flames call home.
