January 5, 1983 - During the third period of what would end up being an 8-3 victory over the Jets, Wayne Gretzky records an assist on Mark Messier's shorthanded goal. This is Gretzky's 68th assist of the season and his 100th point. It's only the Oilers' 42nd game of the season.
Gretzky's scoring totals always blow my mind, especially those from the early 80's. Consider this:
- Through 41 games this season the Oilers have scored 99 goals total. Gretzky himself had 100 points by the same date and the Oilers had scored 216 goals in total.
- Gretzky would get started on his next 100 points with a shorthanded goal of his own while the Oilers were still killing the same penalty. He'd fall short of the 200 point mark though, finishing with 196 points, only the fifth best total of his career.
- Gretzky's 125 assist in this season would have been enough to win the Art Ross Trophy even if he'd failed to score a single goal.
- On two occasions in 1983 Gretzky would record his 100th point of the season. He would repeat the feat on December 18, 1983 when he scored his 100th point of the 1983/84 season in just his 34th game.
