Cam Barker Named the KHL's Top Defenceman

6

Cam Barker - yes, that Cam Barker - has been named the top defenceman in the KHL after posting 9 goals and 31 assists in 55 games for Bratislava Slovan this season. Maybe it's time to give him a second chance. Maybe not.

Shot attempts from the Oilers defencemen

+

Looked into the proportion of shot attempts from the Oilers defencemen this past season. Expected to see this number increase with McLellan behind the bench, and it did, but there was a drop, along with the possession numbers, around the 67-game mark.

Where are they now? - Charles Linglet

+

In this edition of where are they now, we feature former Springfield Falcon and Oilers AHL team veteran Charles Linglet.

Since his 5 game stint with the Oilers in the show, he's apparently bounced around the KHL until settling in Minsk where he's become quite the scorer. In fact he likes it so much there that he's moved his family over, and is now a Belorussian citizen representing his newly adoptive country in the IIHF championships. He has two years left on his contract and seems very content with life.

Taylor Hall Will Play for Canada at the World Championship

+

A couple days after it was announced that Connor McDavid would be playing for Team Canada at the World Championship, word now from Jack Michaels that he'll be joined in Russia by Taylor Hall.

This will the third time in four years that Hall has joined Team Canada at the Worlds. He was part of the team that won gold last year.

Northlands Coliseum, the Birthplace of the Wave?

11

Up in Edmonton, meanwhile, where the local NHL squad already routinely packed its arena to the brim thanks to the on-ice exploits of a lanky teenager named Wayne Gretzky, things were different. So when Henderson took a gig working a handful of games at Northlands Coliseum during the 1980–81 season, he brought his new cheer with him, and saw, for the first time, the phenomenon’s true potential. "It was sold out," Henderson remembers of Northlands, "and when I did the Wave there, it looked spectacular."

In an article for The Walrus, Michael Hingston looks at the origin of the wave and it's connection to Rexall Place. As someone who is very anti-wave, I find this quite troubling.
