Four year deal for former Penguin

The Oilers sent Ethan Bear to Carolina just a while ago. They’ve brought in Cody Ceci now for four years with a 3.25 AAV.

Ceci was a good, if not great player for the Penguins last season on a one year, 1.25MM deal. Ceci averaged about 18 and a half minutes for the Penguins, which put him at 5th among Penguin defencemen in time on ice. Most often with Mike Matheson, Ceci’s underlying numbers weren’t great or hideous, they were OK. As a third pair, I think Ceci is a just fine, but I’m not sure that’s what the Oilers have in mind after inking him to four years.

Equipped with Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci, the Oilers are now about to run a similar look that the Maple Leafs ran on their top four back in 2019-20. It’ll be interesting to see how Evan Bouchard fits in (or around) those two. With Barrie (3 years) and Ceci (4 years) on brand new deals, the Oilers have solidified the right side for the next few years.

Will it pay off?
