In lieu of the links today, and with Tyson Barrie’s (3x$4.5MM or thereabouts) and Zach Hyman’s (7x$5.5MM) deals essentially official, I figured it would be prudent to simply start the UFA Day thread early.
Hyman is a good player and should help in the near term. The deal almost certainly will come with long-term pain but the hope with Hyman is he helps in the immediate, and he does stand a chance of doing that — despite his never eclipsing 41 points in an NHL season.
Zach Hyman, reportedly signed 7x$5.5M, is a top line complementary winger who consistently drives scoring chances in tight. Combo of term and age is obviously the risk here. #LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/VjIUUTh1lw— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) July 28, 2021
The contract itself is, not great.
Barrie, on the other hand, is not a good player and will likely hurt the Oilers for all three of those years. He’s coming off a season in which everything broke right for him individually and, still, he was an overall drag on the Oilers results.
Tyson Barrie, reportedly signed 3x$4.5M by EDM, is a one-way offensive defenceman whose strong passing ability and powerplay skills are counteracted by being arguably the worst defensive blueliner in the league. #LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/GhQLiaaApZ— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) July 28, 2021
Stay tuned for the rest. But don’t get your hopes up:

This might be my last day supporting this franchise.
