Edmonton Oilers Free Agency Open Thread

Tyson Barrie and Zach Hyman are as good as done. Will Ken Holland address the goaltending? Is today the day he trades Ethan Bear for a third line forward? Stay tuned.

Morning, folks.

In lieu of the links today, and with Tyson Barrie’s (3x$4.5MM or thereabouts) and Zach Hyman’s (7x$5.5MM) deals essentially official, I figured it would be prudent to simply start the UFA Day thread early.

Hyman is a good player and should help in the near term. The deal almost certainly will come with long-term pain but the hope with Hyman is he helps in the immediate, and he does stand a chance of doing that — despite his never eclipsing 41 points in an NHL season.

The contract itself is, not great.

Barrie, on the other hand, is not a good player and will likely hurt the Oilers for all three of those years. He’s coming off a season in which everything broke right for him individually and, still, he was an overall drag on the Oilers results.

Stay tuned for the rest. But don’t get your hopes up:

This might be my last day supporting this franchise.
