This is a breaking story, it will update as more details become known.

The Oilers will acquire defenceman Duncan Keith for what looks like Caleb Jones and a pick.

We’ve hashed and rehashed this trade to death. Ken Holland had his eyes on a greybeard, and he’s made his acquisition. Duncan Keith will be 38 in three days from today. He played a boatload of minutes last season, and all of his partners had better numbers away from him. He’s a three time Cup champ, a two-time Norris Trophy winner, and he’s been to a couple of All-Star Games. He’s at the end of a hall-of-fame career. Unfortunately for the Oilers, I’m not sure how much better that’s going to make the club.

The Oilers lose Caleb Jones to the Chicago Blackhawks. Tippett was reluctant to give him any big minutes last season, and Jones was a prime candidate for Seattle to select him in the expansion draft.

In short, I don’t like this at all. The Hawks had to dump a 5.54MM x 2 year cap hit. They did. They got Caleb Jones at under 900K, and they now have nearly 5 million in cap space off the books to chase Seth Jones should they choose to in a trade.

As of this time, I do not hear anything about a cap retention. We will update there’s any new information.

That 3rd round pick will have to be in 2022, because the Oilers don’t have one of those in 2021.

Tim Soderlund is a 23 year old winger who split time between Allsvenskan (SWE) and the AHL in Rockford. He put up five points in 23 games with Rockford, and is under contract for 826K for the 2021-22 season when he will become an RFA.

You’re going to hear about how you’ll need to wait and see what happens with this trade. You cannot. It’s not a good trade. Asking Duncan Keith to perform the same task he did in Chicago minus 5 or 6 minutes a night is going to be a fool’s errand. He’s an all-timer in Chicago. The Oilers did not win this deal today, and have cost themselves an impact free agent by absorbing 100% of Keith’s cap space in the process.

May God have mercy upon us all.
