The border will be open next round, at least for the NHL.
NHL teams will be allowed to cross the border for the third round of the playoffs, and if necessary, the Stanley Cup final.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has announced that the winner of the Winnipeg Jets / Montréal Canadiens series has received the blessing from the Government of Canada and federal health officials for both teams to cross the border for travel in the series. Expect the same rules to apply should one of Montréal or Winnipeg make the Cup Finals.
The NHL deserves praise for running as close to a flawless return to play scenario in August of 2020. The league split sixteen teams between Edmonton and Toronto, teams were bubbled throughout their time in the playoffs. Testing will very much be the norm, clubs will fly to Canada on a private jet and will still need to be bubbled from the general public.
The 2021-22 regular season is expected to begin in mid-October this season without a hitch. Let’s get through the Stanley Cup unscathed and we’ll hopefully be on our way back to a safe new season.
