The Montreal Canadiens, 5v5 possession darlings with ~0.900 goaltending and, therefore, a pretty underwhelming regular season record, have since paired that same 5v5 acumen with 0.935 goaltending in the playoffs and are four wins away from the NHL’s ultimate prize.
I really, really am not looking forward to them winning it, but they seem to be the team of the moment and, certainly, stranger things have happened. Like most likely forgetting about a promising prospect you drafted two years ago, for instance.
Anyway, who cares, right?! The lessons the Oilers will take from this will run almost certainly NOT be to build an excellent 5v5 team and upgrade the goaltending, but rather that anything can happen as long as they get in. I hope they get swept.
(But if Jeff Petry wins one, part of me will experience some happiness for him.)
