Look, I’m petty. We’re all petty. Every single one of us feels a little lighter this morning after the Toronto Maple Leafs put the finishing touches on blowing a 3-1 series lead to an, IMO, clearly inferior team. Montreal had something like 43% of the 5v5 GF% in this series, and still won. Can you imagine?
Oilers Twitter legend WheatNOil said it best:
It’s a great point. No position is more important than goaltender come playoff time. Which is cool for them, but is it correct?
Well, according to the NHL it is. The goaltender becomes ever more important when the league makes scoring less likely, and the league loves blunting offense in the postseason. By ‘letting players play’, we all understand by now that that means making it harder for good players to play. I don’t need to remind anyone here that it’s been two postseasons running now — so, eight games — in which Connor McDavid hasn’t drawn a SINGLE penalty. This is what they wanted.
And now Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Auston Matthews, and Alex Ovechkin are out in round 1.
Good job, Gary.
