Oilers drop what became a close game after a late third period rally came up just short. They had their chances, though. PLUS: Dave Tippett was close with his deployment last night. Hopefully he stays the course.

Morning, folks.

Not quite the same joie de vivre this morning after what was a pretty frustrating hockey game last night between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens. That was one of the worst officiated hockey games I’ve ever seen. The penalties they didn’t call were plenty. The penalties they did were absolutely laughable.

Can you remember the last time you saw TWO goaltender penalties in the same game?! It’s an absolute fucking joke and it really does impact my ability to enjoy it. I hate it so much. Both sides could have — and should have — had a handful of power plays and, dare I say it, the Oilers should have had thirty.

While it is absolutely true that both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were running around last night trying to fill their transcripts with extra curriculars, it’s worth considering why. This is the culmination of not being protected for 45 or so NHL games and receiving absolutely zero protection from the league and its officials. What did they think was going to happen?! Zack Kassian’s existence actually doesn’t deter shit, but someone was going to do something eventually.

In either case, Edmonton gets a bit of time to think about it as they don’t lace them up again until Monday. Hopefully between now and then Dave Tippett runs a practice or two with close to the same lines, he was very close to optimal last night. Bring in Dmitry Kulikov for Kris Russell and Evan Bouchard for Tyson Barrie, dress Tyler Ennis, and move Haas to 3C instead of Devin Shore and he’s really cooking with gas.
