According to Oilers head coach Dave Tippett, Mike Smith is not likely to be in the crease for Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Smith sustained a lower body injury on Tuesday when teammate Devin Shore accidentally fell on him during play. Smith was able to skate off on his own power, but would end up missing Thursday’s game in Arizona and Friday’s game in Vegas.
Mikko Koskinen played in both Thursday and Friday’s contests, turning aside 63 of 67 total shots en route to picking up two wins. News of Smith’s likely absence will all but ensure that Mikko Koskinen gets the start at home versus the Flyers on Wednesday, and would likely start on Saturday against the Canucks if Smith was unable to go.
Since Mike Smith’s injury, Koskinen has played every minute for the Oilers. He’s stopped a total of 83 of 88 shots, picking up three wins in three opportunities. He’ll be in the net on Wednesday as the Oilers look to make it a perfect 6-0-0 to start the season.
