Light news this morning, so I’ll be quick. Oilers ‘top’ F prospect Raphael Lavoie has found work in Sweden once again, this time with Väsby IK in the country’s second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan.
For a more on the move — and if you’re not fluent in Swedish — dust off your Google Translate and click the tweet below:
This is good news. Lavoie couldn’t seem to find his footing during his tryout with Rögle BK, and his exit from earlier this week was a bit of a shock. Typical cynics like me were worried that perhaps this had something to do with his not being good enough without really giving credence to just how difficult it is for a North American prospect to crack a professional lineup in Sweden’s top league.
While the HockeyAllsvenskan is a step below, this likely means that Lavoie will be in line for more meaningful minutes, even if against lesser competition. But, of course, there are far worse landing spots for a D+1 prospect who needs all the reps he can get, especially this season.
As noted Oilers smart man, Jonathan Willis, noted this morning:
This is a sensible decision. QMJHL -> SHL was a big ask, bigger even than QMJHL -> AHL. In the Allsvenskan he'll be challenged but should get heavy minutes. https://t.co/cgOqkOV41m— Jonathan Willis (@JonathanWillis) September 23, 2020
I imagine the Oilers would still prefer his playing in the AHL instead, but who knows when the next AHL season will actually begin. The NHL has admitted that they aren’t sure when they will be starting next season, and their resources far outstrip the AHL’s.
Also, Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals goes tonight. The series is tied 1-1.
