First thing’s first, a full and hearty congratulations to the 2019-20 NHL MVP — as voted by the PHWA (spits) AND the NHLPLA — Leon “Herr Big Nuts” Draisaitl.
Draisaitl becomes the first Oiler to complete the Art Ross - Hart - Ted Lindsay award hat trick since Connor McDavid did the same way, way back in 2017.
Sure, you might be counting along at home and wondering to yourself how in the royal blue hell the Oilers can sport two of the last four MVPs and yet be so far away from competing for a Stanley Cup. Us too.
You might be fully and completely aware that the Oilers have more MVPs in the last 4 years than they have playoff series wins in the last 14. Same.
Or, you might be thinking Ken Holland is a good and capable GM and have no concern whatsoever that the Oilers — and their two MVPs — are in good hands moving forward. Not I.
Or perhaps that Ken Holland was dealt a bad hand here, and he couldn’t really do too much with it. As if he didn’t add a ton of dead money to the cap himself. As if he didn’t staple the fortunes of his MVPs to one Mike Smith. As if he didn’t buyout a guy who is playing 20+ minutes a night in the Stanley Cup Final right now (we miss you, Andrej Sekera). As if he didn’t inherit a roster with two of the last four MVPs on it.
I have about zero patience left for watching Draisaitl and McDavid be undermined by their own management. Time to get to work, Ken.
This is the thing that kills me about a certain subset of Oiler fans. They get pissed because I’m too negative but the team is literally wasting years of McDavid & Draisaitl’s careers on 40 yr old goalies, AHL tier bottom 6 & D that can’t pass.— Arch (@Archaeologuy) September 22, 2020
