Weekend thoughts and polls!

NHL: Western Conference Qualifications-Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

I’ve been seeing some reoccurring themes and been wondering what people think. I know we have a loyal group of posters that usually chime in. I also know we have people that like to read the articles and not post. I think everyone likes to vote on polls though!

So let’s see what our particular viewership thinks of some of the Oil issues going on right now.

I want Jesse back

This poll is closed

  • 40%
Absolutely and with a Top 6 role for at least 10 games
    (30 votes)
  • 31%
Yes, but he has to earn it and start in bottom 6
    (23 votes)
  • 2%
No way, he quit on the team

  • 25%
No, trade him for something and end the drama

I absolutely want him back and given a Top 6 RW slot to start. I want him to get the same opportunity that Ty Rattie ‘earned’.

Poll

How do you feel about Ken Holland’s body of work so far?

It’s been ok. Better than Chia

He’s been awful. Out of touch and ruining the team.

I’m in the very happy camp. I love the Broberg pick, love the Lucic trade, love the Bear promotion and love how much our PK improved with guys like Sheahan and Archibald. While I’m not a fan in general, Mike Smith did keep us in the playoff race and did a great job. I loved his trade deadline moves as well (despite them not working out in anyway at all).

Poll

AA will have limited return on a trade (4th?). Should we keep him or let him go?

This poll is closed

  • 55%
    Keep him
    (39 votes)
  • 44%
    Let him go
    (31 votes)

I say no. If all we can get is scraps then keep him and see what happens. I don’t like his chances on the free agent market of striking it rich with term and cap. I’d like to see us not tender him an RFA offer and then sign him as a UFA for less money (similar thing Happened to Tomas Nosek last season).

Poll

Who is more likely to score 20 goals next year?

This poll is closed

  • 53%
    AA
    (37 votes)
  • 46%
    JP
    (32 votes)

Next year I say AA is more likely. In general, I say JP.

Poll

Who is more likely to be in the NHL in 2025?

  • 36%
    AA
    (24 votes)
  • 63%
    JP
    (41 votes)

I say JP but it probably won’t be as an Oiler. AA strikes me like the kind of guy who will do great in the KHL.

Poll

Which goalie solution would you prefer?

This poll is closed

  • 44%
Use 14 OV to draft Askarov
    (26 votes)
  • 55%
Trade 14 OV AND one of Russel/Kassian for Kuemper
    (33 votes)
59 votes total Vote Now

Askarov is my pick. I get the argument that Kuemper can do it today and would immediately make us better. I added in a contract dump to make it a little more equitable. No idea if AZ would do it but Russel only costs 1.5 million real dollars next season.

Poll

Who would you rather see traded?

This poll is closed

  • 6%
    Klef
    (4 votes)
  • 51%
    Nurse
    (34 votes)
  • 42%
    Keep both
    (28 votes)
66 votes total Vote Now

I say keep both. Nurse is hitting his prime and Klef has a beauty contract.

Poll

Do you miss Don Cherry?

Random I know. I don’t at all. I feel like the last year has exposed a lot of ugly warts in the hockey mentality. I like the cleanup. I’m tired of reading about racism, abuse and just general awful behavior from some in the hockey community. Canada is the greatest hockey nation in the world but they really struggle with bringing in new people. Eg. my son’s class looks nothing like my son’s hockey team. Yet his soccer/tennis/basketball teams look very similar to his classroom. Eg. I’d describe his class as 40% caucasian with the rest a beautiful mix of coloured, muslim and Asian. His hockey team looks nothing like that. Maybe getting rid of the ‘good old boy’ mentality is a big step towards opening this sport up. It has actually shrunk in the last decade. It used to be a Big 7. Realistically, now there are only 5 nations that could win a best on best. I can’t think of many sports that have so few countries that are good at it? Cricket?

For the record, I do think Cherry should be in the Hall of Fame and celebrated as a legend. I was never a fan but totally respect that he was very influential and did a lot for the troops as well.
