Happy Draft Lottery Day, folks!
It’s that time of year where the (hockey) world tunes in to see which teenager will most likely go where, and I guess when. But also, why? Who? What?
So what the hell happened? Why is it that these Edmonton Oilers couldn’t manage to drag their asses over the hump against a pretty ragged Chicago Blackhawks outfit? Just goaltending? Bad D? Bad luck?
Bad team?
Tippett said the Oilers overachieved in the regular season but underachieved in the postseason.

This comment stuck with me over the weekend. Not because I disagree or anything, but because Tippett’s stating the obvious: the Oilers aren’t that good. They were the 12th best team in the NHL by points percentage heading into the COVID-19 stoppage, and their head coach — a smart man whose hiring and performance seems to have brought most Oilers fans together, which is a rare thing these days — said that was overachieving.
So, I wonder: if overachieving is slightly above average, what does that make them? Average, at best? Five years into Connor McDavid’s career?
That’s not great.
