First things first, our very own Shona — who works as an administrative coordinator for one of Edmonton’s homeless shelters — shared her perspective and thoughts about hockey and her relation to it in this new reality. Worth your time, for sure. Take social distancing seriously. Don’t protest at the legislature.
A couple of signings to report yesterday. First, the Oilers finally made official what had been rumored for a couple of days: the signing of Swedish D Theodor Lennstrom. Lennstrom looks slated to start in the AHL to provide some depth to a blue line that saw both Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones graduate to the majors full-time this season. Sticking with the Condors, incumbents C Brad Malone and C Luke Esposito were signed to two-year extensions.
News broke recently that somewhere between 9-12 NHL teams are ‘bidding’ for the right to host playoff tournaments if the league decides to resume the season. Given all the smoke, one has to assume Edmonton is among them, and likely among the frontrunners to land a tournament given their new facilities downtown. I still hate it.
23 years ago yesterday, Curtis Joseph helped backstop the upstart, underdog Oilers to a massive game 7 upset of the heavily favored Dallas Stars. 23 years. Man.
Much has been written about Connor McDavid’s otherworldly ability to draw penalties (and the refs’ uncanny ability to still not call most of them), but the Oilers have another group of players who help them in that regard.
A few more bits and bobs but that’ll about do it for the high points today. Get yourselves acquainted, then washed, then isolated, and we’ll see you bright and early tomorrow.
