Morning, folks!
The links will continue at least until I don’t have the time or energy to do them, but given I’ll be home for the foreseeable future, I should.
We’ll try to keep it mostly NHL related but, of course, there are bigger stories occurring around the world so there is potential for some of those showing up, too.
As of this morning, the NHL has updated their position on the current season, and have allowed NHL players to return home to their families now that the CDC has recommended no in-person gatherings of 50+ people.
As such, the NHL has taken action to allow their players a real reprieve, likely with an eye toward resuming the season on May 15, or eight weeks from now.
Time will tell if that’s wholly optimistic or not, but don’t be surprised if, four weeks from now, they cancel the season entirely. There are bigger things at play here, and its important for organizing bodies to save people from themselves if necessary.
As of this morning, the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames have both changed their tunes in regard to paying their affected event staff. Both organizations needed to be publicly shamed into doing the right thing, but they eventually did. The Oilers beat them to the punch, which is good. But a more cynical reading of their initial press conference and quick about-face could be that they required some public heat to step up, too. Either way, they did, and it’s a relief.
That leaves only Eugene “Please, fans, lend me your livers” Melnyk as the sole Canadian team owner not paying his affected event staff. As such, the twitter account has its mandate for the day. We’ll get to work. For the people.
Otherwise we’ve got links chock-full of Oilers content for at least today. We’ll see how the rest of the week unfolds but for right now, there are things to read while you’re pooping. Introduce yourselves to them, politely, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow.
