The Oilers have acquired Andreas Athanasiou (10-14-24 in 46 GP) from the Detroit Red Wings.
The Oilers trade: Sam Gagner and a second round pick from 2020 and 2021.
The Red wings trade: Andreas Athanasiou and forward Ryan Kuffner.
Edmonton retains 10% of Sam Gagner’s cap.
Before everyone goes ballistic about paying two second round picks for what looks like a rental, Athanasiou is an RFA after this year. Deep breaths.
Some quick hits
ATHANASIOU
There’s a player to play alongside Connor McDavid. Andreas Athanasiou is fast, and he’s a gifted puck-handler. He’s going to be a playmaker to play alongside the greatest player in the world, and that’s exactly what the Oilers are going to need to compliment the top line while the second line of 93-29-56 continues their red hot run. Athanasiou can play either centre or wing, which may prove useful in the coming months.
It’s a marked improvement over sticking McDavid with a player like Sam Gagner or Alex Chiasson. Oh my God, they got Tyler Ennis too?
More to come.
