We have finally arrived at the NHL Trade Deadline! The time of year where rumours rule supreme and we are all a little more cognizant of that checkmark beside Twitter accounts.

The Edmonton Oilers got an early jump on the trade action last night, acquiring D Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings, but there are still a few needs that Ken Holland could address. Chief among those needs is a top six scoring winger to play alongside Connor McDavid. We could also see Holland make a move for a depth winger.

There are some hints about who the Oilers could shed as well. The acquisition of Green causes a bit of a logjam at RHD. Currently the team is rolling out Ethan Bear, Adam Larsson and Matthew Benning, all of which are NHL regulars. Bear is definitely not going to be involved in trade talks but one of Larsson or Benning could be moved to secure a forward.

Up front there are questions about some depth forwards who could be moved out as well. Jujhar Khaira has underperformed this season and there has been talk that other teams have asked about him. There is also Sam Gagner, whose $3.1 million price-tag could prove troublesome for Edmonton’s cap situation and could be moved to a rebuilding team with more space.

1:05PM — The Edmonton Oilers are done for the day after acquiring Mike Green, Andreas Athanasiou and Tyler Ennis! As per Rishaug

1:03PM — The Carolina Hurricanes acquiring both Vatanen and Skjei is HUGE for their blue line! best defensive group in the league bar none.

1:00PM — The NHL Trade Deadline has now passed! Deals that were registered with the NHL before the deadline can still be announced so stay tuned!

12:58PM — The Vegas Golden Knights acquired Robin Lehner.....what? The Knights are loaded in goal right now...

12:50PM — As we reach the deadline another big name comes off the board! Sami Vatanen is headed to Carolina! Still awaiting the return.

12:28PM — Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues are going to Pittsburgh while Dominik Kahun goes to Buffalo....interesting to see Kahun on the move once again

12:13PM — We won’t have to wait too long to see the new guys! Both Green and Athanasiou will be in the lineup against Anaheim tomorrow night! As per Rishaug

12:04PM — The Flames make a decent pickup by getting Erik Gustafson out of Chicago as per Francis

12:00PM — BREAKING! The Edmonton Oilers have acquired Tyler Ennis from the Ottawa Senators for a 5th round pick in 2021! Ken Holland ain’t fooling around!

11:54AM — Friend of the show Alex Thomas says the Oilers aren’t done....he’s legit so I’d believe him!

11:33AM — The full deal between Edmonton and Detroit is bit larger than initially thought! Sam Gagner goes to Detroit along with the picks while prospect Ryan Kuffner follows Anthanasiou to Edmonton.

11:26AM: We move from Edmonton to Calgary as Johnny Gaudreau was seen leaving the ice for an unknown reason...

11:23AM: The return appears to be two 2nd round picks to Detroit from Edmonton for Athanasiou...its a gamble but Ken Holland and the Oilers are going for it this year and I am here for it!

11:11AM: WE GOT ONE! Per Good Miller the Edmonton Oilers have acquired Andreas Athanasiou from the Detroit Red Wings! No word on the return

10:30AM — Frank Seravalli reporting that Zach Parise is close to being traded to the New York Islanders! The trade would reunite Lou Lamoriello and Parise...no word on the potential return

10:19AM — We have a hit a dry spell and my oh my am I having a time trying to stay awake!

9:50AM — The Buffalo Sabres made a move....for Wayne Simmonds? A strange move for a team that is supposedly selling but each to their own I guess. No word on who is heading back to NJ.

9:35AM — Eric Francis (yes that Eric Francis) is reporting that Andreas Athanasiou is close to being dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets...that would take another Oiler target off our board.

9:31AM — The insiderr himself calls Mike Hoffman to the Oilers....would be a huge if true!

9:15AM — Scratch that last update! Darren Dreger is reporting that Krieder will be re-signing with the Rangers! The top trade chip is off the board!

9:12AM — My desperation to find anything related to the Oilers has led me to HockeyBuzz, where Eklund is reporting that the Oilers are one of the teams hot on the tail of Chris Krieder. Seems like he’s priced out of Edmonton but who knows! (Eklund isn’t a real credible source but its fun to speculate)

9:01AM — DONE DEAL! The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 3rd round pick!

8:57AM — Jimmy Murphy from BosHockeyNow reporting that Patrick Marleau has been traded for a 3rd round pick...destination unknown

8:49AM — The Philadelphia Flyers acquired Nate Thompson from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a 5th round pick. Thompson was linked to the Oilers a tiny bit in the past few weeks.

8:47AM — CapFriendly sent the tweet out again for anybody wondering

8:45AM — CapFriendly’s official Twitter accounted tweeted out that the Oilers put another player on LTIR last night but deleted the tweet shortly after. They speculated Kris Russell but it could be James Neal as well. If it turns out to be true it opens up a bit of cap-space for Ken Holland to work with

8:34AM — Both the Panthers and the Hurricanes are shifting their focus on acquiring a defender. Could Ken Holland dangle Adam Larsson to land a guy like Mike Hoffman?

8:13AM — The official deal sees the Carolina Hurricanes acquire Vincent Trochek from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Chase Priskie and Eetu Luostarinen....very surprised that Dale Tallon opted to trade Trochek.

8:09AM — Remember that Trochek rumour from earlier? Well it looks like it is coming to life in the most recent report from Friedman!

7:52AM — The Senators receive a 1st and 2nd in 2020 and a 3rd in 2021 from the Islanders in the Pageau trade....an absolute haul for Pierre Dorian on that deal.

7:50AM — Word is spreading that Tyler Ennis has been traded.....not sure where but Edmonton has been linked to him HEAVILY over the past few days

7:47AM — ANOTHER BOMB! The New York Islanders have swung a deal to acquire JG Pageau from the Ottawa Senators! Awaiting return

7:37AM — BREAKING! We have got our first trade of the day as the Colorado Avalanche acquire F Vladislav Namestnikov from the Ottawa Senators! This coming from Elliotte Friedman...the return is a 4th round pick in 2021.

7:26AM — Elliotte Friedman reporting that Carolina is sniffing around Vincent Trocheck. Would have to think a D-man would go back in any potential deal. Pesce or Gardiner potentially? Maybe Jake Bean goes back? Interesting rumour

7:20AM — TSN’s Frank Seravelli reporting that Ottawa would like to get a 3rd round pick for Tyler Ennis. This is a problem for the Oilers as their 2020 3rd rounder is tied up with the James Neal trade and their 2021 3rd rounder is tied to a condition with the Mike Green trade.

7:15AM — Appears Edmonton was never close to acquiring Kovalchuk from the Canadiens. Would have been a great low-cost target had he not gone to Washington

6:51AM — Tomas Tatar would be the perfect acquisition for Edmonton. He’s got a scoring touch and is signed for another season. Would you trade a 1st and Samorukov for him? I’d definitely consider it.

6:41AM — Bobby Mac reporting that the Canucks are pushing hard to acquire Tyson Barrie out of Toronto. VAN wants to send Troy Stecher the other way but TOR wants more. This would be a big deal IF it happens.

6:35AM — Doing some digging around trying to find every Oilers rumour that I can. Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal mentioned Trevor Lewis of the LA Kings as a potential target. Lewis is a 33 year old centre with 9pts in 49 games...I don’t see him as a fit on this roster.

6:26AM — BREAKING! Dustin Byfuglien will not be playing hockey this season and will have his contract terminated by the Winnipeg Jets. The big man has been contemplating retirement this season.

6:13AM — One of the more interesting stories of the day involves the future of Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau....TSN’s Pierre LeBrun says the Sharks will be listening on both players. Could Jumbo Joe return to Boston for a cup run?

6:08AM — I am stuck watching the Sportsnet panel today and do not know if I can handle a full day of Eric Francis....send help.

6:00AM — Goooooooood morning Oil Country! Just woke up after a hearty 4 hour sleep (gotta love the sleep schedule of a college student) and I am ready to buckle in to an interesting trade day!
