Morning, folks!
In a bit of a fight with the ol’ Timex this morning but we’re up, we’re Adam, and we’re ready to rumble.
Ethan Bear, perhaps already the team’s second-best defender, remains without a contract. Granted, he’s not the only good, young defender without a deal right now (Devon Toews in NYI, for instance), but prudence suggests the Oilers should get the hell on it already.
In case you missed it, yesterday the Oilers inked Yale standout D Philip Kemp to a three-year entry level deal with just under a year to go before they would lose his rights as an NCAA-route draft pick. With that done and dusted, they can focus on where to put him in the near term.
Remember, the Oilers had a player similar to Kemp come through the ranks in a similar way recently, but he opted not to sign after his college career, and ended up being traded for a song. That player, John Marino, also posted 3-8-11 in 33 GP in his third year in the Ivy League, just like Kemp. Marino then went on to score 6-20-26 in 56 GP in his first year in the NHL, with an RAPM chart that looks like this:

Wowza. Here’s hoping Kemp continues to mirror Marino’s development curve.
