The Oilers have made qualifying offers to a pair of defencemen in Ethan Bear and William Lagesson. Both Bear and Lagesson’s qualifying offers should check in at just over 800K. More importantly, it keeps both players in the Oilers’ fold and eligible to sign a longer term deal.

This is especially important for Ethan Bear, for who the Oilers ought to sign a long term deal. I seem to recall reading that the club is likely to get Bear on a bridge deal, though I’d be surprised if this worked out to their financial advantage in a couple of years. William Lagesson could find himself on the big club some time in the 2020-21 season, especially now that Oscar Klefbom is likely to miss some time due to a shoulder issue.

The Oilers will say goodbye to at least six unrestricted free agents, they are

  • Logan Day
  • Cameron Hebig
  • Ryan Kuffner
  • Ryan Mantha
  • Angus Redmond, and
  • Nolan Vesey.

They will likely also wave goodbye to Andreas Athanasiou and Matt Benning, both of whom spent time on the Oilers roster in the 2019-20 season. Due to financial constraints, they will both likely be joining new teams for the 2020-21 year.
