Morning, folks!
Not much happened in Oilers land yesterday, with most of the biggest stories involving some of their Western rivals.
THE VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS HAVE SIGNED DEFENSEMAN ALEX PIETRANGELO TO A SEVEN-YEAR CONTRACT!!!!!!! #VegasGoesGold | #VegasBornhttps://t.co/MI6vo45nEy

Welp. Pietrangelo is the goods, a Norris-caliber defender who joins the best team in the division looking to cement their position at the top:

But this move put the Vegas Golden Knights over the salary cap, so they had to make another one to get cap compliant before ‘registering’ the Pietrangelo deal:
#Canucks have acquired defenceman Nate Schmidt from the Golden Knights in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. https://t.co/ryQs0D8vmU

Oof. If you’re Vancouver, you’ve got to love replacing Chris Tanev for Nate Schmidt at the cost of a third round pick. Sure, there’s something to be said for Vancouver being so willing to help a division rival get out of jail, but that’s a cut-rate price for a good player and it’s hard to hate taking advantage of it:

Two division rivals getting better yesterday. And the Colorado Avalanche — who are probably having the best off-season of anyone right now — swindled legitimate top four (two?) defender Devon Toews from the New York Islanders for two second-round picks. Oof.

With the Oilers apparently done, it pains me every time other teams do good things. There was a fair bit of that yesterday.
