You know, I thought it would take at least a few weeks of regular season play before the Oilers got absolutely railroaded this year. Granted, it’s preseason. Granted, it was the third game in four nights, and guys like Anthony Peluso were seeing ice out there, but still. That sucked. I hope you didn’t watch it, for your own sake.
Of course, this is preseason. It’s not a time to focus on results. Coach Dave Tippett said as much, calling last night’s abomination ‘a good evaluation game’. Rumor has it he wants to trim the roster down to ~30 players before the team travels to Kelowna, and given they stood at 46 yesterday, clearly there are some decisions to be made.
They do have one more preseason game before they head west for a few days, with the Flames in town to do battle at 7PM MST. I’d imagine there will absolutely be cuts after that one, but some guys were so bad last night that they might get their walking papers this morning.
Anton Burdasov doesn’t figure to be one of them just yet, as the newly-signed-to-a-PTO forward has yet to see any action in preseason. Tippett mentioned recently that his fitness was an issue in practice, which may have to do with a 24-hour travel day (and, I’d imagine, some outrageous jet lag) a few days prior.
Cooper Marody, last night’s lone scorer, might have done just enough to get to the second week of camp with a second straight good performance individually.
Mikko Koskinen had a bit of a howler. The goaltending situation gives me the heebie jeebies. It should you, too.
Have a good weekend!
