Oilers might’ve reached a bit in round one. They knocked it uot of the park in round two. In round three, they’re moving on to select a goaltender. The Oilers selected Ilya Konovalov with their 85th selection in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Ilya Konovalov had a fine season for Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (KHL), where he finished with a ,930 SV% on the year (tied for ninth in the league). He was showered with awards and accolades throughout the season, which was his rookie campaign. Konovalov won rookie of the year honours, he also won rookie of the month (twice), and he also won goaltender of the week (twice).
He’s got two more years on his contract
At just over six feet tall, Konovalov takes up a lot of net down low.
When I’m playing, I don’t count up how much shots I’m facing. Whether it’s 10, 20, 38, I just worry about stopping the next one. You don’t win many games otherwise
Konovalov was the fourth highest ranked goaltender outside of North America in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. All eyes will be on him to see if he can turn in a 2019-20 season that was even better than his last.
