Now that the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the St. Louis Blues, It’s never too early to start making predictions for the upcoming season. The day after the last game of the 2018-19 season seems like a good enough place to start.
Early odds say that the Oilers are 40/1 to win the Cup in 2019-20. A cool G is going to yield 40,000 this time next year if it all works out. Easy money, right? It worked for the guy who bet on the Blues.
Before you run out there and cash out your savings account to bet on the Oilers, consider that the guy who bet on the Blues is, well, really lucky. Like everything else, these numbers fluctuate throughout the year. A big free agent season for Edmonton could shrink these numbers, while a period of inactivity between now and September will likely cause them to swell.
Some notables (All odds courtesy of BetOnline)
The Oilers’ 40/1 odds might not be the best in the Pacific, but they’re certainly not the worst. The Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks both begin the offseason at 66/1 odds. Vancouver is right next to Edmonton at 40/1, while the Coyotes (33/1) fare slightly better off. Calgary (18/1), San Jose (16/1) and Vegas (9/1) lead the pack.
The St. Louis Blues won the Cup less than 48 hours ago, they open the offseason at 12/1 to repeat. Boston begins the offseason at 9/1, while the Tampa Bay Lightning open as the favourites at 8/1 to win it all in 2019-20.
