Morning, everyone. Another busy day means more delayed links, so let’s get right into it.
Yesterday, the Oilers placed D Brandon Manning on injured reserve with a hand injury, likely stemming from his fight with Barclay Goodrow in the San Jose game. As such, the Oilers recalled Caleb Jones, a player who many thought was pacing the D prospects coming into the season.
Jones received his NHL bow last season and showed quite well in a third pairing role. It wasn’t until his elevation to the second pair, alongside a really, really bad Adam Larsson, that he was exposed at this level. Lineup information hasn’t been released yet today, but it’s certainly going to be interesting to see whether he plays or, like William Lagesson, he’s just up here to get that NHL money.
Nathan MacKinnon and the actually good Colorado Avalanche are in town tonight for a 7PM start. That means the typical GAMEDAY routine is queued up to come at you, so definitely circle back throughout the day.
Over the weekend, Sunil joined the CBC to discuss the Oilers’ first 20 games. Yesterday, he followed that up with an in-depth article about that same subject, looking at the key drivers and reddish flags worth looking into at this point in the season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is edging closer to Free Agency. With Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, the Oilers made their beds and are currently trying to find which side of the pillow suits them best. Jonathan Willis argues that RNH’s future should be handled differently, and that the Oilers would do well to keep him. I of course agree, but as with every player, it comes down to term and total. What’s the ticket? He’s an excellent player at $6MM. At $8MM, I’m less interested. Another interesting thread to watch over the coming weeks/months.
Let’s leave it there for now and let the links do the talking. See you in the comments.
