Another fun one in the books as our Oilers cruised to 3-0-0 on the back of a 5-2 drubbing of the New York Islanders at the old Nassau last night. That was a capable, confident performance from start to finish — or, at least from the start of the second period on, when I started watching — that saw the Oilers maintain and extend their large lead while staying in front on the shot clock for the bulk of the game. Impressive stuff.
Also worth noting that James Neal bagged himself a couple of Oilers records yesterday with his sixth goal in three games to both start the season and start his Oilers career. In three games he’s already matched Milan Lucic’s total goal-scoring output from a season ago. He needs 10 more to cover Lucic’s last two years combined. Given his location on an apparently lethal power play, don’t be surprised if he does that by Christmas.
Mikko Koskinen earned his first win of the season but still neither goalie has looked incredible for an entire game. I wonder who Tippett will go back to against the Devils.
McDavid finds himself tied with Mika Zibanejad atop the NHLs points race, which is supremely impressive given McDavid’s obvious rust with the puck. Once he gets back to full speed again, the league will be in real trouble.
