Morning, Oil fans!
A busy Thursday is in the books as the Oilers had to shuffle some defenders around to best navigate the salary cap in the wake of Adam Larsson’s injury. I know some people bristled at the idea of sending Ethan Bear down after a pretty capable game one, but it really does appear to be the Oilers’ best cap work in some time, moving players around to maximize their LTIR relief. I believe it’s likely recall Ethan Bear before tomorrow night’s game, so stay tuned.
Nobody’s sure exactly when he suffered the broken fibula, but most believe it was during a shot block in the first period. His last shift was a few minutes into the third. Tough break for a player desperately in need of — and likely wanting to — bounce back after a pretty tough 2018-19 season.
Tough for the Oilers, too, who chose to buy out Andrej Sekera this summer instead of Sam Gagner, who they eventually waived, and are now even lighter on capable veterans in their defensive ranks. Sekera suits up tonight on Dallas’ second pairing, as an aside.
The Oilers will enjoy another practice day today before welcoming the LA Kings to town for their first foray into Hockey Night In Canada this year. Look for the Oilers to take advantage of their soft landing to start the season, maintain their 164 pace, and jump all over an obviously bad Kings team that couldn’t beat the menu screen in Super Mario World most nights.
No news about who starts for the Oilers, but don’t be surprised to see Mike Smith given the nod after a few days off and an admittedly sound performance in game one.
That should about do it for the high points on this Friday morning, now get yourself a complete breakfast and get yourself read up, we’ll see you tomorrow for our game coverage.
