The Edmonton Oilers have extended defenceman Joel Persson for one year through the 2019-20 season. Persson is currently the leading scorer among defencmen on Vaxjo in the Swedish League. He’s also the club’s second leading scorer overall.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE OILERS?
There’s a fairly good chance that this signals the end of Matt Benning’s time in Edmonton. A right shot defenceman, the soon-to-be 25 year old Persson will likely contend for the third spot on the right side. With Evan Bouchard likely to make a serious push next season, the likely addition of Joel Persson may push Matt Benning closer to the trade wire at the end of February.
HOW MUCH DOES THIS SET EDMONTON BACK?
The extension is for one year at 1MM. That’s less than what Matt Benning makes. It’s also less than half of what Brandon Manning makes. Good deal.
Persson can play in any situation. He’s able to jump up into the play, and he can help run the power play as well. Expect to see lots of him in 2019-20.
