According to a few reports, including Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, the Oilers have re-signed Goaltender Mikko Koskinen to a three year deal.
Mikko Koskinen extension with #oilers:
— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) January 21, 2019
2019-2020: $5.2M
2020-2021: $3.3M+$500,000 SB
2021-2022: $4.5M
Koskinen started out really hot, but has struggled of late. The 30-year old is currently sporting a 0.911 sv%. I assume there’s a reason to do this deal after he’s played 27 games for the Oilers, and I assume there’s a reason it’s for $4.5M and for 3 years, but I can’t imagine those reasons are good.
So the goalie of the future right now, is the goalie of the present. I guess this is showing Cam Talbot the door after he’s been bottom rung for a year and a half. I don’t know what’s going on here, guys.
The day started with talk of Peter Chiarelli being fired. Instead, two of his acquisitions were waived, a promising young defenseman was sent to the AHL, and now, a goalie has been given more than he’s shown to have earned thus far. So for all of you who came into the day thinking this:

You were right.
There will be no Semyon Varlamov, or Sergei Bobrovski, or whatever other UFA goalie could be an upgrade over our starter. This is it. Enjoy.
