Darnell Nurse Has Signed His Contract

Alright, let’s play some hockey.

TWO YEARS

If I’m reading John Shannon correctly here, that looks like a multi-year deal at 3.2MM a year. That’s right about where I expected it to be, and it will take the Oilers almost right up against the cap. The Oilers have some maneuverability to sign one of the PTOs for about 700-750K, but that will be it. At least, until Andrej Sekera hits LTIR in early October. We’ll cross that bridge if we need to.

COMPARABLES

Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey recently signed a two year deal worth 3.15MM a year over in Winnipeg. Fair to assume that this signing may have helped push Nurse’s deal along. Both did not have arbitration rights. Both players now have a similar deal for the next two years.

Darnell Nurse is a player that Chiarelli couldn’t afford to get away right now. Rumours swirled that he wanted to be paid like the team’s third best defenceman (spoiler alert: he is the team’s third best defenceman currently) and that his ask may have teetered above the 4MM mark per year. The Oilers simply couldn’t afford that, and Darnell Nurse has signed a two year deal for 3.2 MM AAV.
