Shortly after the Stanley Cup was awarded on Thursday night, oddsmakers were quick to ship the 2019 odds to win the big trophy. How’d the Oilers do?

For a team that missed the playoffs by 17 points, that’s a pretty strong showing. That being said, 18-1 odds are a bit longer than last year’s 10-1 offerings.

A lot can change between now and the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Will Milan Lucic be on the move? Will the Oilers decide to move their best defeceman for help on the right side? Can the Oilers cobble together some spare change to sign a winger like Thomas Vanek or Michael Grabner? Each one of these moves could put some movement on those odds.

The Lighting open as the favourites with 9/1 odds. The Leafs, Bruins Jets and Golden Knights are right behind Tampa at 10/1 (side note: take the under when Vegas’ points come out later this offseason).

AT THE OTHER END

Like a long shot? The Devils are 40/1. The Sabres? 66/1. How about the Rangers at 70/1? Both Vancouver and Arizona open at 80/1, and the Ottawa Senators come in at a cool 100/1 to win it all in 2018-19.

Only the Golden Knights (10/1) have better opening odds in the Pacific Division than the Oilers. It’l be interesting to see how many points the Oilers are predicted to have as the new season draws closer.

A busy couple of weeks are coming up for the NHL. The buyout period start soon, and the NHL Draft is less than two weeks away. The free agency signing period comes up three weeks from today.
