It’s Ostap Safin! You know, Ostap! The fourth round selection in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft? Ostap Safin? There’s plenty of time to get acquainted with Edmonton’s newest contract. It’s a three year entry level deal for Ostap Safin, he’s an interesting prospect.
The newly-19-year old Prague native was selected 115th overall in last June’s draft. A 6’5” winger with a left shot, Safin is averaging nearly a point per game (24-29-53 in 56 GP) with St. John’s in the Q. Safin is a good skater, and he’s like fifty feet tall (he’s 6’5”).
(If you’re not following @EdProspectWatch on Twitter, take five seconds out and go do that).
At the time of the draft, I wrote that Safin was a ‘boom or bust’ pick. There’s a lot that happens between the Q and the NHL, and we’ll have to wait to see if Safin rides that golden elevator to the top. I love that he’s got a great shot, and I love that he’s a big dude who can skate. Safin’s physical stature makes it tough on opponents. I’m a big fan of big physical players who are gifted offensively. At this stage, that’s what we’re seeing from Ostap Safin.
