2017’s fifth round pick has been signed to a three year entry-level deal.
Here’s what Copper and Blue contributor Shona had to say on draft day about Maksimov
At 6’2” and 192lbs, Maksimov brings some size to the Oilers selections. He’s noted for good speed and having a strong forecheck combined with some play making skill. Ranked 66th overall in North American skaters, Maksimov is a good depth pick for the Oilers. Also of note, Maksimov is a right wing and a right handed shot. The Oilers seem to be attempting to add some strength and size in an unrated package with Maksimov.
Since then, Maksimov’s stock has risen. He’s got 73 points in 59 games in his first full season with the Niagara Ice Dogs (OHL).
Maksimov looks like he’s about eight feet in this clip. It’s a shame he’s not two more years along and ready to step into the show. I hear the Oilers could use a right winger.
Maksimov turns 19 in June. It’ll be a couple of years before he’ll get the opportunity to see the NHL, but it’s nice to see the Oilers catch a prospect in the fifth round that could become a player.
