Valentin Zykov Placed on Waivers

Turns out that the unnecessary waiver claim was unnecessary.

The Oilers put Valentin Zykov on waivers. He played five games for the Oilers, a whopping 51 shifts, mostly on the bottom lines.

He was too slow to keep up, this is why it’s important not to get caught up in those AHL stats. Some really good players can’t score down there, and some sub-NHL players can put up a lot of goals down there.

Hopefully this means that one of Kris Russell or Andrej Sekera is getting taken off of IR. And I really hope it means that Alex Chiasson isn’t injured long-term.

If not, we’ll probably see a call up. Either Kailer Yamamoto, or Cameron Hebig, would be my guess.

I’d have preferred they just made one of those call ups in the first place and ignored this waiver claim in the first place. Waiver claims are often a waste of time. It’s fine if it’s a player who is a clear upgrade, but that is very rarely the case. They’re on waivers for a reason. I would be perfectly happy if the Oilers just didn’t bother putting in waiver claims ever again.

If Zykov clears, I expect he’ll be assigned to the Bakersfield Condors.
