Meet the Pandas: Part 1

Profiles of the 2018-2019 University of Alberta Pandas Hockey Team

The University of Alberta Pandas are one of the premier U Sports women’s teams across the nation. The team holds a record 8 National Championships and 12 conference titles, making it one of the most successful women’s hockey programs in U Sports.

Again this season, it is my privilege to be able to work with the team, including producing profiles of some of the best hockey players in Edmonton.

Name: Halle Oswald

Position: Goalie

Height: 5’6”

Why did you choose the Pandas? The atmosphere is amazing. Everyone gives it all they got, and the girls were so welcoming. It really feels like a second family

Name: Lindsay Weech

Position: Defense

Height: 5’8”

What is your favourite sports team or athlete? For the longest time I never really had a favourite sports team but since being in Edmonton the Oilers have really started to grow on me!

If you have a nickname, what is it? My nickname is Weech (so my last name) sometimes Weechy also gets thrown in there also.

What’s your current favourite song? I am quite the romantic so my favourite song is usually a love song, right now it is With You I Am by Cody Johnson.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I picked to be a Panda because I knew I wasn’t just joining onto a team I was going to be signing onto a family.

What is your favourite summer sport? My favourite summer sport is softball and cross country running.

What is your favourite type of book? I love science-fiction books.

Name: Autumn MacDougall

What’s your current favourite song? Homegrown

Why did you choose the Pandas? The legacy and the success of the pandas program is something special and I wanted to be a part of that.

What is your favourite summer sport? Soccer

What is your favourite type of book? I don’t really read but when I do it’s sport books.

Name: Regan Wright

Position: Forward

What is your favourite sports team or athlete? My favourite team is the Chicago Blackhawks and my favourite player is Jonathan Toews.

If you have a nickname, what is it? My nickname is Reegs.

What’s your current favourite song? My current favourite songs are Hammer to Fall by Queen and You’re the One by Greta Van Fleet.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the Pandas because of the winning tradition in this program and because of the excellent things alumni and team members said about being a Panda.

What is your favourite summer sport? My favourite summer sport is hiking (not sure if this is a sport).

What is your favourite type of book? My favourite type of book is anything written by Jane Austen

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the pandas because of the history and culture of the program.

What is your favourite summer sport? My favourite summer sport is probably volleyball or soccer.

What is your favourite type of book? I like to read books based on past historic events.

What is your favourite sports team or athlete? Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

If you have a nickname, what is it? My nickname on the team is Kryz.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the Pandas because I heard about the amazing culture at the U of A and the history of the Pandas.

What is your favourite summer sport? Badminton or spike ball.

What is your favourite type of book? My favourite type of book is basically anything that’s not $200 and “required” for class.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose to be a Panda because it’s home for me and the program has always had success. Coming to the summer camps in high school I was able to interact with some of the current Pandas playing and I looked up to the people they were and the culture they built.

What is your favourite summer sport? I like being on the boat during the summer surfing.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the Pandas because of the amazing things I had heard about the program from girls I had played with before.

What is your favourite summer sport? Tennis and spikeball

What is your favourite type of book? Suspense/ thriller

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the Pandas because of the history and culture that the team has along with the exceptional education that the University of Alberta provides.

What is your favourite summer sport? Baseball

What is your favourite type of book? Anything that isn’t a textbook.

What’s your current favourite song? I Don’t Know About You by Chris Lane

Why did you choose the Pandas? I loved everything about the Pandas; the culture, the expectations, and the history of excellence. The University of Alberta’s academic opportunities were also a large contributing factor.

What is your favourite summer sport? Tie between golf and tennis.

What is your favourite type of book? I prefer paperbacks over hard covers and ebooks, but my favourite genre is science fiction.

Name: Alex Gowie

Position: Forward

Height: 5’8”

Eligibility: 4th Year

What is your favourite sports team or athlete? My favourite sports team is the Vancouver Canucks since I grew up in BC.

If you have a nickname, what is it? I usually go by Gowie or Gow, but some of the girls on the pandas have begun to call me Grandma.

What’s your current favourite song? My current favourite song is “Let it be me” by David Guetta.

Why did you choose the Pandas? I chose the pandas because I heard great things about the program and I wanted to be a part of a team with so much legacy.

What is your favourite type of book? I’m not huge on reading for fun but if I do it has to catch me from the first few pages or else I probably won’t finish it.

The Pandas will travel to take on the Manitoba Bison on January 4th and 5th in a battle at the top of Canada West Conference.
