Time For Hockey

The players are ready and the ice is set.  The Edmonton Oilers are ready for their split-squad matchup with the Calgary Flames. While it's nice that hockey is back, sending half a squad to Calgary while keeping the other half of the squad in Edmonton to play half of Calgary's squad while the other half of Calgary's squad is back in Calgary is almost as difficult to cover as this sentence.  Either way, we've got preseason hockey on tap, and it's not a minute too soon.

The Oilers are saying

That's Oilers' head coach Todd McLellan after yesterday's scrimmage.  Team White rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win it in a shootout.  The shootout winner?  Jujhar Khaira, of course.

The opponents are saying

That's Flames goaltending coach Jordan Siglet on Calgary's two new netminders.

Siglet's got his relationship work cut out for him this year with Mike Smith (who spent 2016-17 in Arizona) and Eddie Lack (who spent 2016-17 in Carolina).

Have some of this

  • LINES:  Lots to look for.  In Edmonton, the Oilers are rolling out what could be their top line to start the season in Maroon-McDavid-Strome.  They sent all of the defence to Calgary, as tonight's top pair at Rogers Place features Darnell Nurse and Eric Gryba.  In Calgary, the trio of Milan Lucic - Leon Draisaitl - Drake Caggiula will be top dog.  Oscar Klefbom / Adam Larsson is your featured pair at the Dome, while Laurent Brossoit and Nick Ellis will mind the net.
  • BACK TO JUNIORS:  The Oilers sent  Ostap Safin, Kiril Maksimov, Dmitri Samorukov, Dylan Wells and Stuart Skinner back to their junior clubs yesterday.
  • Joey Laleggia is playing wing instead of defence.  I'm not sure how much more room that buys him on the roster, but he was with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jesse Puljujarvi on Friday.  I've got him pencilled in somewhere near Will Butcher, which is to say not really pencilled in at all.
  • ELSEWHERE: The Florida Panthers have completed a very bad trade, sending Jason Demers to the Arizona Coyotes along with a fourth round pick for Jamie McGinn.  McGinn's 17 points (9-8-17) are Florida bound while the Coyotes received a top four defenceman that shoots right.  Dale Tallon has now given away a 30 goal scorer in Jonathan Marchessault to the Vegas Golden Knights, now this.  What's going on in Florida?
  • Let's.  Go.  Oilers.
