Oilers Sign Jokinen

NHL: Florida Panthers at Montreal Canadiens Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

The Oilers have signed Jussi Jokinen to a one year contract. The Native of Finland put up 28 points in in 69 games last year with the Panthers. In his career he has 456 points in 891 games including a 60 point campaign just two years ago. It’s not out of the question that he can get to the 45-55 mark with the Oilers this year.

What we know:

  • The Oilers need a RW and a LD, so naturally the Oilers go out and sign a C/LW
  • Jussi Jokinen is an excellent possession player,
  • Started his career with the Stars and was on the team when this happened.
  • Has been suggested here before

What will the forward lines look like?

That’s a pretty tough question to answer. We can assume the McDavid line will stay in tact, and getting another center provides evidence that Draisaitl will continue on the wing. Jussi Jokinen might be the guy brought in to fill David Deharnais’s shoes on the fourth line although I’d like to see him get more ice time than that.

Maroon - McDavid - Draisaitl

Lucic - Nugent Hopkins - Puljujarvi

Caggiula - Strome - Kassian

Letestu - Jokinen - Slepyshev/Khaira

I guess it’s not out of the question that he and Letestu will be playing for next year’s contract. Letestu had an excellent year last year as a 4th liner with special teams duties. This is decent insurance in case it isn’t sustainable and Jokinen has a very similar skill set.

Overall, this is a good signing and our team is starting to look really good. Just gotta get that Draisaitl extension complete and the forwards should be set.

Contract Details to be updated as info comes in.

UPDATE: Contract is worth 1.1 Million dollars
