The Oilers did not extend qualifying offers to former Oil Kings David Musil and Henrik Samuelsson yesterday, making them instant UFAs. Also failing to receive a qualifying offer was Zach Porchiro, famously acquired in the deal that sent Nail Yakupov to Edmonton. While the lineup to sign these players is likely very tiny, a few teams closed the door on a few players who may actually receive some interest. They’d come cheap, too.
MIKHAIL GRIGORENKO - C
2016-17: 10-13-23 (76 GP)
2016-17 Cap hit: 1.3MM
Most common linemates: Carl Soderberg, Matt Duchene
It’s been an interesting career path for Mikhail Grigorenko. The Sabres traded up to get him in the infamous 2012 draft and kept him past the ten game trial period in both 2012-13 and 2013-14 only to stash him back in the Q both years. Eventually, he was dealt to Colorado in the Ryan O’Reilly deal, where he’s compiled 50 points in two seasons. He’s 6’3” 205+ and won nearly 58% of all faceoffs last year.
ALEX CHIASSON - W
2016-17: 10-14-24 (81 GP)
2016-17 Cap hit: 800K
Most common linemates: Sam Bennett, Johnny Gaudreau
Calgary must be hot on Kris Versteeg’s heels still, because Chiasson could probably be had for roughly the same contract he had last year. A second round selection by Dallas back in 2009, the 6’3” Chiasson had a 35 point season back in 2013-14 with the Stars. Managing just 24 this year with Calgary, I would be somewhat surprised if he didn’t get a look from somewhere.
NAIL YAKUPOV - W
2016-17: 3-6-9 (40 GP)
2016-17 Cap hit: 2.5MM
Most common linemates: Patrik Berglund, Paul Stastny
I’d do it just for the collective groan I’d hear out of some of the base. After not receiving a qualifying offer from St. Louis, the former first overall pick is free as a bird. I’d do it for a year, but it’d have to be cheap. What’s the worst that could happen? Plenty of depth on the right wing. It’s not like the club traded Jordan Eberle or anything.
Anything from the bargain bin do it for you?
