Wild 5, Oilers 2: Costly Errors Prove Too Much For Oilers To Overcome

New, comments

Oilers fall flat after long weekend

Not a red letter day for Kris Russell
Not a red letter day for Kris Russell
Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

Just the bullet points, please.

First Period

  • RIght off the bat, the Oilers went to the net after winning the first draw.  Great start after being off for a long weekend.
  • Two and a half minutes in, McDavid bursts in over the blue line, bats a puck down near the point and shoves it to Leon Draisaitl.  Draisaitl gets a shot off.  I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching McDavid skate, he's just the wind.
  • Cam Talbot with a brilliant save at the five minute mark on a tip by Jason Zucker.
  • Eleven minutes in, Andrej Sekera gets about seven seconds of time near the Kuemper's left and lets off a wrist shot.  Sekera's the best defenceman on this team and it's not close.
  • With seven minutes to go, Milan Lucic gets his pocket picked behind the goal line to the left of Cam Talbot by Tyler Graovac.  Graovac gets it to the point.
  • GOAL:  Twenty seconds later, Tyler Graovac is the right man in front of the net.  Kris Russell doesn't get great position, the puck bounces off of Andrej Sekera and Graovac has half a net to hit.   1-0 Minnesota
  • Last seven minutes of the first period have been owned by Minnesota.  Majority of the play in Edmonton's end.
  • Two minutes to go, the fourth line gets a rush.  Kassian with a shot to Kuemper's left, but it's handled.
  • One minute remaining in the period, the Lucic line sees some life.  Slepyshev takes a bad angle shot and Lucic looks for the garbage in front, but no dice.
  • GOAL: With less than ten seconds remaining in the period, Kris Russell puts the puck up the boards to Draisaitl, who never gets control.  Mikko Koivu digs it out and it floats to a wide open Jason Zucker just three feet in front of Talbot.  2-0 Wild.
  • What a frustrating goal.  End of first:  WIld 2, Oilers nil.  Shots:  Wild 14, Oilers 13.

Second Period

  • Benoit Pouliot draws a high sticking penalty one minute in on Wild defenceman Matt Dumba.  Oil to the man advantage.
  • Oilers take a minute to set up, a largely uneventful man-advantage.  One shot on the power play.  Score remains 2-0 Minnesota.
  • GOAL: Zack Parise gets two whacks in front of Cam Talbot.  Wild cash again.  Wild 3, Oilers 0
  • Each one of Minnesota's goals are being scored right in front of Talbot.
  • GOAL: Eleven minutes in, Adam Larsson takes a shot from the right point and a flurry of sticks wave at it in front of Darcy Kuemper.  Anton Slepyshev gets credit for the first Oiler tally.  Score: Wild 3, Oilers 1
  • GOAL: Less than a minute later, Kris Russell tries getting the puck up from his own goal line.  It's knocked down by Mikael Backlund.  Backlund carries it right in front of the net, then dishes it to your good friend Tyler Graovac.  Graovac buries it behind Talbot.  It's the third stupid thing I can count Kris Russell doing tonight.  Wild 4, Oilers 1.
  • Laurent Brossoit replaces Cam Talbot.
  • Oilers go on the power play after Mikko Koivu gets nailed for a two minute slashing penalty on Connor McDavid.
  • POWER PLAY GOAL: Leon Draisaitl scores his 20th of the year from Milan Lucic and Andrej Sekera.  Wild 4, Oilers 2.
  • After the Oilers scored to pull within two, they were flying for about thirty seconds.  Graovac making it 4-1 really knocked the wind out of their sails.  Still, Leon's late power play goal gives them life.  Aftter 40:  Wild 4, Oilers 2. Shots:  Wild: 21, Oilers 29.

Third Period

  • Updates in this period get fewer and fewer.  It's one of the side effects from drinking Old Vienna since two hours before the opening faceoff.  Not sorry.
  • Two minutes in, Darcy Kuemper clears the puck over the glass.  Oilers head to the power play.
  • As Minnesota's penalty expires, Chris Stewart gets a long pass from Jason Zucker.  A 2-on-1 ensues, and while Oscar Klefbom blocks the passing lane, Stewart snipes one behind Brossoit's right shoulder.  Wild 5, Oilers 2
  • Adam Larsson takes a delay of game penalty after he knocks the puck over the glass.  Wild to PP
  • With three minutes remaining, a scrum erupts in front of Laurent Brossoit.  Both Zack Parise and Jason Pominville wack at it and the puck ends up behind Brossoit. The call gets reversed to "no-goal". It goes to the war room.  Puck determined to be 'batted' into the net with a glove.  No goal. Score remains Wild 5, Oilers 2.
  • The horn sounds.  Edmonton didn't have a prayer.  Wild 5, Oilers 2. Shots:  Oilers 43, Wild 35

Final Thoughts

  • Two goals for Tyler Graovac.  Bet y'all had him in your Minnesota pool.
  • Talbot got the hook after the fourth goal.  Not that guy's fault.
  • You wanna use the "All Star Hangover" excuse?  OK.  Doug MacLean did during the intermission.
  • Good thing:  Draisaitl scored his 20th goal of the season on the power play.  So there's that.
  • The Oilers gave the puck up 21 times tonight.  The Wild gave it up only four.   The Oilers gave it up in front of the net, to the side of the net, various sundry areas in their own zone.  No good.
  • Kris Russell will want to scrub this game from his memory.  The Russell-Sekera pairing had no fun.
  • Oilers hit the road for nine of their next twelve.  They start with Nashville on Thursday.
