Oilers Score Four In Second, Keep Sharks From Clinching

A four goal second period helped propel the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-3 victory in San Jose, keeping the Sharks from clinching a playoff berth.  The Sharks burst out to a 2-0 lead after goals from Tommy Wingels and Joe Pavelski.  The Oilers responded with goals from Lauri Korpikoski, Taylor Hall, Patrick Maroon and Adam Clendening (!) to end the second period with a 4-3 lead.  Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton in the third, and Taylor Hall tucked in an empty netter to give the Oilers an unlikely six goals over San Jose.

Patrick Maroon had a three point night, Adam Clendening had two, and Connor McDavid is the best thing since ever. The Oilers are in LA to finish their three game road trip.  Let's go to the tape.

The Oilers are saying

"Yeah, we may not be in a playoff spot this year, but going into the summer we know that next year if we play 60 minutes we can be a playoff team."

That's Oilers defenceman Jordan Oesterle.

Oesterle's got that glimmer of hope in his eye still.  He'll learn.

The opponents are saying

"These are games that we could have separated ourselves a little bit...We've got to get going here, we're running out of games, you can't get to the playoffs and then flip the switch, so we've got a lot of work to do here in the next couple of weeks."  Source

That's Kings forward Jeff Carter.  The Kings have dropped three straight, the world is ending.

Have some of this

  • Oh.
  • Cam Talbot (20-25-4, .918 SV% / 2.52 GAA / 3 SO) should get the nod for the Oilers tonight.   Jonathan Quick (37-20-4, .919 SV% / 2.18 GAA / 4 SO) should get the start for the Kings.  Talbot is one win away from tying his career high 21, which he amassed with the Rangers last season.
  • Connor McDavid, you guys. Another assist puts him at 43 points (14-29-43) on the year.  If you didn't see the goal, McDavid set up Patrick Maroon on a two-on-one, and Maroon absolutely buried the puck behind James Reimer to put the Oilers back on top 4-3.  With just five games to go in the season, can the Oiler phenom possibly hit 50 points?
  • Andrew Ference (hip), Brandon Davidson (knee), Adam Pardy (hand), Eric Gryba (knee), Benoit Pouliot (shoulder)  Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (concussion) and Oscar Klefbom (leg), are out for the Oilers, . The Kings will be without Vincent Lecavalier (undisclosed), Matt Greene (shoulder), Jordan Nolan (back), Marian Gaborik (knee), and Kris Versteeg (foot).
