The Oilers didn’t look great for a full 60 minutes in either game last week, but starting the season with a pair of wins against the Calgary Flames - by scores of 7-4 and 5-3 - is a very nice way to kick off a new season. That the Flames dropped a third in a row last night in Vancouver makes the start seem even better somehow. The Oilers will look to keep the good times going this week when they host the Sabres, Hurricanes, and Blues.

The Sabres visit Edmonton on Sunday night in search of their first win of the season (they’ve only played one game, so let’s not get carried away). And they do so with injures that are almost enough to make Oilers fans feel bad for them; Jack Eichel, Evander Kane, and Dmitry Kulikov are all out with injury. The key word in that sentence is almost, none of us are actaully going to feel bad for them.

It’s been a decade and the first thing that comes to mind with the Hurricanes is still the 2006 Stanley Cup Final - Why was Ty Conklin on the bench in Game 1? And this will probably continue to be the case until the Oilers finally make the playoffs again, whenever that might be. I would love to separate the two in mind, and to finally start the healing process, but I’m just not there yet, and since the Hurricanes still employ Cam Ward I’m okay with not letting go.

Welcome back, Nail Yakupov. It didn’t work out between the team and you, and there is plenty of blame to go around, not that that matters any more. You’re a member of the Blues now and the Oilers are experimenting with players in your old spot. What’s done is done and hopefully you can find happiness in a new situation. And hopefully you score 15 goals while you’re at at.
