The price has been set

With Andrej Sekera, Daniel Winnik and Jiri Tlusty traded today, the price has been set for D Jeff Petry.

What a busy not trade deadline day but pretty much trade deadline day.

LW Daniel Winnik was moved from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins for C Zack Sill, a 2015 4th round pick and a 2016 2nd round pick.

The Winnipeg Jets acquired C Jiri Tlusty from the Carolina Hurricanes for a 2015 6th round pick and a 2016 3rd round pick.

The biggest move of the day was the LA Kings trading D Roland McKeown and a Conditional 1st round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for D Andrej Sekera.

The Sekera trade was one that has been a long time coming, and one that comes at an ideal time for the Oilers.

Goodbye, old friend

Jeff Petry is likely to be moved come the deadline and while many have speculated on his value, anything less than what Carolina received for Sekera would be a disappointment.

Using Rob Vollman's Player Usage Chart, we are able to see that Jeff Petry and Andrej Sekera draw very similar competition and are both shut down players.

Andrej Sekera 18.0 1 0.7

With Sekera on the move today, Jeff Petry has now become the best available defencemen heading into the NHL trade deadline.

The Blackhawks, Red Wings, Rangers and Ducks are all teams that are showing interest in the right handed defenceman.

As we inch closer to the deadline, I'm curious too see what GM Craig MacTavish has up his sleeve for the next few days. I would hope he continues to drive the price up as much as possible.
