While making my rounds on the Oilers blogosphere, I came across an interesting post on HFBoards where a user pointed out that Craig MacTavish said during a Sunday night interview that the team has two third round draft picks in this year's draft.
Transcript from the Oilers website:
"It’s an extremely important draft. The primary focal point of our organization right now is in preparation for this upcoming draft. We now have Pittsburgh’s first-round pick. We have two first round picks. We’re going to get an early pick in the second round so that’s going to be a pick that we’ve got to utilize very well. And then we’ve got two third-round draft choices. It’s essential that we do very well at this year’s draft."
If you look back to last season, on March 4th, 2014, the Oilers traded their 2014 5th round pick and their 2015 3rd round pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Viktor Fasth.
A day later on the NHL trade deadline, the Oilers shipped off long time Oiler Ales Hemsky to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2014 5th round pick and a 2015 3rd round pick.
I think this is more of a freudian slip rather than him being incompetent, but hopefully he doesn't walk up to the podium to make Ottawa's draft pick for them in June.
