Oilers Try to Get Out of the Gutter

The Lightning tie the game in the second but the Oilers fight back to win 5-3

The Oilers did something that they haven't done in a while. They beat a playoff team but it wasn't pretty.

Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

In my last post game wrap up I mentioned that the Oilers would be facing a non-playoff team next. I was stupid and just assumed that Tampa wasn't a playoff team because of their loss of Steven Stamkos and the fact that they weren't a playoff team the last time the two teams met. I failed to remember that Tampa plays in the Eastern Conference and relatively mediocre teams can look really good in the East, just look at the Toronto Maple Leafs. Anyway the Oilers faced the 3rd placed team in the East and played a relatively decent game if you overlook the second period. By eye the Oilers seemed to play better when the game was close but as we all know our eyes can deceive usHere are the numbers courtesy of @ExtraSkater.

Some of the things to note from this game. The Oilers allowed their first power play goal against of 2014 on a goal by Nikita Kucherov. The Oilers still haven't allowed a short handed goal in 2014. Finally the Oilers score their first power play goal of 2014 on a strange goal by Jordan Eberle.

Boyd Gordon's Game Winning Goal

This goal was interesting. Tampa had all 5 of their defenders down low but the only player covered was Gordon. Some how Gordon was able to get the puck on his stick and still score. This is a defensive play we typically see from the Oilers but this time the Oilers were the team that got to capitalize.

Next to the David Perron acquisition, Boyd Gordon was probably the best move Craig MacTavish made this offseason. Sure he's not a goal scoring machine but he does his job well and contributes offensively better than Eric Belanger.

Tweets of The Game

So I am going to stick with the same format from last game.

What was being said before the game started:

What was being said during the game:

What was being said after the game:

This is actually a Tweet from Ben Massey but since his Twitter account is locked I had to quote it and retweet it.

Three Stars

I'm not gonna SportsNet this and give Luke Gazdic a star for scoring a goal, Ryan Jones style, off his ass. I will however give him an honourable mention since he did have the best game he's ever had.

  1. Nail Yakupov - He had another strong game and although he didn't score was once again the Oilers team leader in Corsi For
  2. David Perron
  3. Jeff Petry

I know I didn't include Jordan Eberle or Taylor Hall tonight but even though they had multi point games tonight neither was good enough defensively to earn a star.

The 5 Game Outlook

The next 5 games are going to be pretty brutal as the Oilers will face St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Dallas and Minnesota. Only 2 of the 5 will be on home ice so anyone attending those games might want to watch out for flying Oilers jerseys.
