11:20 AM - OILERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH F JESSE JOENSUU
The Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Jesse Joensuu on a two-year deal.
Joensuu, 25, is a 6'4" 209 lb forward who played seven games last season for the New York Islanders, netting two assists. The native of Pori, Finland has played 67 career NHL games -- all with the Islanders. He has eight goals and 15 points with 47 career penalty minutes.
Craig MacTavish signed the foward to a two year deal worth $1.9 million.
Joensuu is a guy. He does some things. None well. His underlying numbers are dark and dreary. Not IsMental-level bad, but bad nonetheless. Bob Stauffer, a paid employee of the Oilers, Tweeted that he believed Joensuu would start the season as a wing on the third line. That idea couldn't have come from a bright hockey person.
But he's very big. He was once a second round draft choice. He can play both LW and RW He's had moderate success in the European leagues, but has never been able to duplicate it in North America, in either the AHL or NHL. And he's big.
