Edmonton Signs Jason LaBarbera To Back Up Devan Dubnyk

The Oilers finally sign a reliable backup.

USA TODAY Sports

From the Oilers website:

10:37 AM - OILERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH BOYD GORDON AND JASON LABARBERA

The Oilers have agreed to terms with ... goaltender Jason Labarbera on a one-year deal.

Jason Labarbera, 33, played 15 games last season for the Phoenix Coyotes. He had a 4-6-2 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.

In 175 career NHL games with Phoenix, Vancouver, Los Angeles and the NY Rangers he has a 59-70-19 record with a 2.84 goals-against average and .908 save percentage

Craig MacTavish signed the goaltender to a one year deal for $1 million.

The quick take here is that LaBarbera is a solid backup able to spell Devan Dubnyk when needed. From 2009-10 through last season (his time spent in Phoenix), LaBarbera appeared in 17-17-19 and 15 games, and will likely be counted on for a similar number this season. His numbers from his time in Phoenix show a very solid run:

Year G SA SV Pct. ES SA ES SV ES Pct.
2009-10 17 459 426 0.928 352 328 0.932
2010-11 17 529 481 0.909 417 386 0.926
2011-12 19 486 443 0.912 391 355 0.908
2012-13 15 418 386 0.923 346 321 0.928

68 1892 1736 0.918 1506 1390 0.923

Compared to Nikolai Khabibulin's numbers in Edmonton, LaBarbera's numbers look simply amazing

Year G SA SV Pct. ES SA ES SV ES Pct.
2009-10 18 602 547 0.909 486 449 0.924
2010-11 47 1389 1236 0.890 1087 984 0.905
2011-12 40 1114 1014 0.910 889 812 0.913
2012-13 12 376 347 0.923 318 297 0.934

117 3481 3144 0.903 2780 2542 0.914

One thing to be mindful of with LaBarbera's Phoenix numbers is the Dave Tippett Effect. If it was, indeed, worth .06 in even strength save percentage to LaBarbera, his .917 isn't nearly as impressive, but it's still better than Khabibulin.
