The Oilers announced today that Lennart Petrell has been placed on Injured Reserve
#Oilers GM Steve Tambellini announces forward Lennart Petrell has been placed on injured reserve
— Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) February 23, 2013
Petrell was likely placed on IR to make room for Ryan Jones, the winger who has been on IR with a torn retina suffered when he took a deflected puck to the face.
Petrell has been suffering the affects of a concussion, suffered during warm-ups against the Avalanche on February 16th. Petrell took an errant puck to the head, and though he's been skating, has not made his way back into the lineup yet.
Petrell's move to the IR prevents the Oilers from making the tough decision of whether to send Teemu Hartikainen or Magnus Paajarvi down to Oklahoma City or waive Ben Eager or Lennart Petrell in order to have enough open spots on the roster.
Unless the team suffers another injury, the Oilers will have to make that decision when Petrell or Shawn Horcoff is ready to come back from the IR.
