In what appears to be an unannounced move, the Oilers have placed Taylor Hall on Injured Reserve and recalled Taylor Fedun. dawgbone noted the double asterisk next to Hall's name on the Oilers' roster page and I noted Fedun's presence on the active roster listing:
Lowetide noticed Fedun on the AHL recall list:
The move sets the roster at 8 active defensemen: Fedun, Jeff Petry, Ladislav Smid, Justin Schultz, Anton Belov, Andrew Ference, Nick Schultz, and Denis Grebeshkov. The active roster has just 11 forwards with the Bob McKenzie news that Eberle is a big question mark for the Montreal game, including Tyler Pitlick and, as Ryan Batty notes, the Oilers need to move someone to Long Term Injured Reserve to make the transaction work with the salary cap.
While the aforementioned group hit Twitter hoping for a trade, it doesn't seem likely unless MacTavish can pull an amazing 3 assets for 1 deal.
The move is a strange one because it forces Dallas Eakins to play a defenseman at the forward spot when he's already saddled with Luke Gazdic, Will Acton, Mike Brown, Ryan Jones, and Tyler Pitlick in his top 11. Given the success of the 4th line, the defenseman would almost certainly slot in on the 3rd line, which is awe-inspiring. Conventional wisdom seemed to indicate the Oilers would reach out for Linus Omark, but it seems not to be. I'm left wondering if the Oilers might have used Toni Rajala in this situation had he not absconded to Sweden.
